Corporate investment in AI has exploded since the release of ChatGPT in 2022. Yet, recent data reveals a surprising truth: most companies are barely scratching the surface regarding AI transformation.

According to Gallup, while 93% of Fortune 500 CHROs report using AI tools to improve business practices, only 33% of employees have noticed these efforts. This disconnect points to a missed opportunity — and a risk for companies lagging on AI adoption.

Missing out on the power of AI

Despite AI’s potential to transform productivity, innovation and decision-making, most employees aren’t using it. In fact, 67% say they never use AI in their role.

Even among those who do use it, the applications are limited. Most rely on AI for simple tasks like idea generation and basic data consolidation. While these uses offer some value, they don’t tap into AI's more powerful capabilities, such as predictive analytics, personalized customer interactions or advanced automation.

The reality? Organizations risk leaving AI’s most significant benefits on the table without broader adoption and a strategic approach.

AI productivity gains (and a missed opportunity for greater impact)

Among employees who use AI, productivity and efficiency top the list of benefits, with 45% reporting improvements in these areas. However, with fewer than half of users seeing this advantage, it’s clear that productivity gains are underutilized across most organizations.

When AI is implemented thoughtfully, companies unlock far more than just time savings. They drive innovative solutions, reduce costs and transform customer experiences. In other words, the real promise of AI isn’t just in making existing processes faster but in enabling entirely new ways of operating.

AI FOMO is real (and the solution is simple)

As AI transforms industries, the companies that lead the way will gain a competitive edge. Meanwhile, those that lag risk falling behind, especially in sectors where AI can drive significant efficiency or customer insights. But adopting AI successfully requires more than just purchasing the latest technology. AI adoption requires preparing employees to use it effectively. 

Here are 3 things you should prioritize to ensure your team is ready for AI:

1. Deploy AI training to build confidence + capability

One of the biggest barriers to AI adoption is a lack of readiness.

According to Gallup, only 6% of employees feel "very comfortable" using AI in their roles, while nearly a third feel "very uncomfortable." This discomfort reflects an urgent need for AI training.

By offering hands-on, role-specific AI readiness training, companies can equip employees with the skills and confidence they need to use AI effectively. Training should include topics like automating workflows, personalizing customer interactions with empathy, and leveraging AI-driven insights to make smarter, more collaborative decisions.

When employees feel both technically prepared and confident, they’re far more likely to embrace AI, creating a ripple effect that boosts adoption across the organization.

2. Develop a clear integration plan to align teams + reduce AI resistance

Gallup’s findings show that only 15% of employees say their organization has communicated a clear AI strategy. Without a shared vision, employees may feel uncertain about AI's role in the business and their own job security, leading to resistance.

A well-defined, clearly communicated AI integration plan helps employees understand how AI fits into the company’s goals and their roles. When employees see how AI can support their work rather than replace it, they will be more likely to proactively engage with the technology.

3. Share guidelines + policies to help ensure responsible AI use

70% of employees report lacking guidance or policies on using AI at work, according to Gallup.

This gap limits usage and creates potential security risks. Establishing clear AI guidelines can encourage responsible, secure use and empower employees to explore AI’s capabilities confidently. Policies might outline best practices for automating tasks, analyzing data or ensuring data privacy. The guardrails provided by AI policies create environments where employees feel supported and informed.

The companies that succeed with AI will be those that make a proactive effort to prepare and empower their employees. By investing in AI training and clear guidance, organizations can turn AI from an underused tool into a driver of competitive advantage. 

On the flip side, delaying AI adoption means missing out on powerful gains in efficiency, innovation and strategic insights — while competitors who fully embrace AI surge ahead, capturing market share and setting new industry standards.
