It’s easy to forget the importance of taking breaks. However, short breaks can boost productivity, improve focus and reduce stress. Whether you have just a minute or a full hour, here are some ideas to make the most of your break time.

1-minute breaks

Even a single minute can make a difference in your day. Quick, mindful actions – like deep breathing, stretching or hydrating – can help reset your focus and reduce stress.

These brief pauses are easy to fit into any schedule and keep you refreshed and energized:

1. Deep breathing

Take a few deep breaths to reset your mind. Inhale slowly through your nose, hold for a few seconds, then exhale through your mouth. This simple exercise can reduce stress and help you refocus.

2. Stand + stretch

Get up from your chair and stretch. Reach for the sky, touch your toes or stretch your arms and legs. A quick stretch can relieve muscle tension and refresh your body.

3. Hydrate

Drink a glass of water. Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining energy levels and concentration throughout the day.

5-minute breaks

A 5-minute break offers just enough time to step away from your work and recharge. These brief activities can help clear your mind and boost your energy for the tasks ahead:

4. Take a short walk

Walk around your office or step outside for a quick breath of fresh air. A short walk can improve circulation, boost your mood and clear your mind.

5. Practice mindfulness

Spend a few minutes practicing mindfulness. Close your eyes, focus on your breathing and let go of any distracting thoughts. Mindfulness can help you feel more centered and calm.

6. Listen to a favorite song

Put on a song that you love. Music can lift your spirits, reduce stress and improve cognitive performance.

15-minute breaks

With 15 minutes, you can engage in more meaningful activities. These slightly longer breaks provide a much-needed reset during your workday:

7. Grab a healthy snack

Eat a nutritious snack like fruit, nuts or yogurt. A healthy snack can provide the energy boost you need to power through the rest of your day.

8. Do a quick workout

Use your 15 minutes to do a short workout. You don’t need a formal workout routine, and you don’t even need to sweat. Try a series of jumping jacks, push-ups or yoga poses. A burst of physical activity can re-energize you and increase your focus.

9. Meditate

Take a moment to meditate. Find a quiet spot, close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Even a short meditation session can reduce anxiety and improve concentration.

30-minute breaks

A 30-minute break allows you to fully disconnect from work and engage in something enjoyable. These activities will make it easier to return to work with renewed energy and creativity:

10. Read a book or article

Use your half-hour break to read something enjoyable or informative. Reading can stimulate your mind, provide new ideas and give you a mental break from work.

11. Call a coworker, friend or family member

Catch up with someone you care about. A quick conversation with someone who makes you laugh can boost your mood and provide a sense of connection.

60-minute breaks

A full 60-minute break is the perfect time to mentally and physically recharge. This extended break can help you return to work feeling completely revitalized and ready to tackle the rest of your day.

Here’s a great way to spend an hour:

12. Eat a full meal

Take the time to enjoy a well-balanced meal. Eating slowly and mindfully can improve digestion, reduce stress and help you recharge for the rest of the day.

The benefits of taking short breaks

Short breaks let your mind rest and reset, helping you return to work with renewed focus and energy. Regular breaks also promote better physical health by encouraging movement and reducing the risks associated with prolonged sitting.

Regular short breaks throughout the workday offer several benefits:

  • Improved focus + productivity: Short breaks help prevent burnout by allowing your brain to rest. This can lead to better focus and increased productivity.
  • Reduced stress: Taking a few minutes to relax can lower your stress levels, improving your overall wellbeing and job satisfaction.
  • Enhanced creativity: Stepping away from your work can give your mind the space it needs to generate new ideas and solutions.
  • Better physical health: Regular movement and hydration during breaks can reduce the risk of developing health issues related to prolonged sitting — like back pain or eye strain.

Training to help plan and use breaks effectively

Help your team schedule and make the most of short breaks with productivity and wellness-related training.

Here are some training ideas:

  • Time management workshops: Teach techniques to manage time effectively, helping employees schedule regular breaks without falling behind on their work.
  • Mindfulness training: Mindfulness programs can show how to stay present and make the most of break time — with meditation, breathing exercises or by simply enjoying the moment.
  • Ergonomic training: Help employees learn how to set up their workspaces and incorporate movement into their days. This should reduce physical strain and make their breaks more effective in preventing discomfort.

By taking regular short breaks and using them wisely, your employees can improve their work performance, reduce stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
