A step-by-step guide to helping your organization take the lead in the AI transformation

AI is rapidly transforming industries, and organizations that act as first movers can gain a competitive edge.

To stay ahead, People leaders must focus on two key areas: technical training and soft skills training. While technical skills help employees adapt to new tools and technologies, soft skills are equally, if not more, important. Soft skills like communication, adaptability and critical thinking will be essential as AI reshapes roles and responsibilities.

This guide will show you how to lead your organization in both areas, creating long-term success in the AI-driven world.

1. Assess current capabilities

The first step in becoming a first-mover is understanding where your team stands.

Conduct an AI skills assessment to identify technical and soft skills gaps. This assessment should cover AI-specific tools your organization is adopting and the core competencies required for effective collaboration in an AI-augmented workplace.

Within the AI skills assessment, be sure to evaluate how well employees communicate in cross-functional teams, how adaptable they are to change and how they handle problem-solving. These soft skills will become even more crucial as AI creates new ways of working.

2. Build a balanced training program

Once you've identified skills gaps, develop a balanced training program that includes both technical and soft skills.

While focusing only on technical training is tempting, soft skills training should be prioritized equally. AI tools can automate tasks but AI can’t replace human interaction or emotional intelligence.

For technical training, make sure employees understand how AI tools function, how they can integrate them into their workflows and how to troubleshoot fundamental issues. For soft skills, focus on adaptability, leadership, emotional intelligence and communication. These power skills will help employees work effectively in AI-enhanced teams.

3. Invest in leadership training

In an AI-transformed environment, leadership skills are more critical than ever. Managers must inspire their teams, navigate uncertainty and foster a culture of innovation.

Consider offering leadership training that focuses on managing AI-driven change, including how to guide teams through periods of technological disruption. Manager training should cover how to communicate change clearly, encourage resilience and support continuous learning.

4. Promote continuous learning

AI transformation is not a one-time event; it's an ongoing process.

Being a first mover in AI transformation means being adaptable to constant change. To do this, you’ll want to establish a culture of continuous learning within your organization to keep your employees ahead of the curve. This learning culture should include regular workshops, seminars and technical and soft skills learning opportunities.

By promoting a mindset of growth and adaptability, you’ll position your organization to lead in the evolving AI landscape.

5. Create a feedback loop

Support your training programs by creating a feedback loop where employees can share what they’ve learned and how they apply new skills.

Encourage team leaders to have open discussions about technical progress and soft skills development. This feedback will help you refine your AI training program and make adjustments throughout your digital transformation journey.

This feedback loop also reinforces the importance of soft skills like communication and collaboration, which will play a vital role as AI technologies take over more routine tasks.

6. Foster collaboration across department

AI will change the way teams interact. It's essential to build a culture of collaboration between departments that may have traditionally worked in silos.

Cross-functional teams that bring together people from different business areas will be more agile and better equipped to take advantage of AI-driven opportunities.

Effective collaboration is where soft skills, like communication and adaptability, really come into play. Encourage employees to work closely with others, sharing knowledge and creating solutions that leverage AI in creative ways.

7. Recognize + reward progress

Finally, as you implement these training initiatives, recognize and reward progress.

Employees who successfully learn new AI tools and develop essential soft skills should be acknowledged for their efforts. Celebrating technical and soft skills achievements will motivate others to embrace learning and contribute to the organization’s overall AI transformation.

Being a first mover in AI transformation isn’t just about adopting the latest technology — it’s about preparing your workforce for the future. Balancing technical training with soft skills development will empower your team to thrive in the AI-driven world. While technical skills help employees interact with AI tools, soft skills will give them (and your organization) the edge needed to stay ahead.

Embrace this balanced approach to AI training, and you’ll be well-positioned to lead the AI revolution.
